For the centre bolt installation I used a hacksaw on a 10mm allen key (I have 2, and it's not the most used tool), then put that in a 10mm socket on my torque wrench. Seen tooo many tales of centre bolts coming loose - due presumably to incorrect installation - not to use a torque wrench on this.0 -
The cups need threadlocker too - sorry, could have been clearer there. 222 IIRC - but wait until you have them - if the current ones come with it you can save the money.
I must point out I've installed a grand total of one of these and it was an aluminium one a while ago - I can't stress the value of getting hold of the campag official instructions from their website enough .0 -
I've got the same problem with wheels. Where did you get the price of £360 for the Eurus? They certainly look like nice wheels. I'm sure the Zondas are nice aswell but if you're building a 'dream' bike I guess its worth spending the extra.0
-
Ah, well done aracrer for defeating Mr Campagnolo's tortuous maze of a technical website! 222 it is - it's a milder version of 243 that comes apart easier for service.
The 10mm cut-down allen key is a cunning trick, for which you are awarded today's Order of the Blue Apron!0 -

reddragon - cool that it has all arrived - can you post some pictures of the headset you need to fit? Mine has come oddly too and at first I thought I was going to have to get a shop to fit them, but actually it looks like they are ceramic cartridge bearings that simply fit into the headtube. The crown race is fitted to the forks and I can't see that the bearing need pressed - BUT - it looks completely different to the instruction sheet that specialized have supplied!
aracer - thanks for the link - 222 it is - I had come across that section when looking for the groupset specs - very handy section on the campag site.
also - the 10mm allen key trick does seem like a very god idea!
heavy mental - the eurus are available at Ribble cycles for £399 - but there is an extra 10% off until the end of january - course this same calculation brings the zonda's down to £235 which seems an absolute bargain!!0 -
My headset is how you describe. I was planning taking a few pictures of all the stuff but I can't seem to fine the cable for the camera.
That's the headset, but there are no instructions!

My loctite 222 came aswell today, ordered it off ebay.0 -
yeah - I see - the chamfer edged cartridge bearings just slot into the frame as far as I can see - the difficult bit s if the very bottom silver ring on the picture hasn't been applied to the forks - it needs pressed down the steerer onto the fork crown squarely and firmly. If the crownrace isn't fitted to the fork then I would advise a call followed by a trip to your local bike shop - they shouldn't charge much for that surely
After that, the bearings fit into the top and bottom of the headset, the corks come through from the bottom and the crown race sits ont he bearings, at the top end, the compression washer goes on first followed by the cap and then the spacers and stem - finally the top cap holds it all tight...
...... i think!0 -
Hmm yeh. That is a good price isn't it. Zondas have that kick ass G3 spoking too so I'm wondering if I should go for them as my wheel choice is heavily based on looks
The only thing that concerns me about the campag wheels is the noise of the freewheel. That loud clicking really annoys me. I'm used to dura ace hubs that run virtually silent. I heard you can put a load of grease into the hub to quieten it down but that its noit a long term solution. Anyone got any knowledge about that?0 -
Heavymental wrote:The only thing that concerns me about the campag wheels is the noise of the freewheel.0

Well yeh, but if...as I'm planning....I go for a 13-29 casette with a compact chainset (because I need the low gears for the hills and Campag don't seem to do a cassette that covers low and high) i'm going to be freewheeling down hill alot and that noise is going to be accompanying me all the way. Plus if you think about it you do generally freewheel quite alot on an average ride.0

Regarding cassettes, one option is to get a custom Marchisio cassette. As I suggested elsewhere recently, a good option for a compact would be 12,13,14,15,16,18,20,22,25,28, (or possibly 23,26,29 or 23,26,30 at the end for even lower gears) but nobody does such a thing as stock, with the first 2 tooth jump either 15-17, where it's obtrusive even on a compact, or further down than needed at 17-19.0 -
Hmm - thats an interesting option that I hadn't thought of.
are they expensive to buy? and what is the quality and shifting like in comparison to something like a std. mid range (i.e. centaur) cassette offering?0 -
I suppose it depends what kind of riding you do. I think I freewheel a fair amount and don't really want those moments to be accompanied by a loud noise. I'm not sure how noticeable it is as a rider but I know when I'm riding with my campag buddy his hub is noisy as hell so I always give him some stick about it because its obvious when he's freewheeling! I guess its not going to affect my decision so I should forget about it and hope for the best.
check this out though...

it just aint stealthy!
yeh, the marchision cassette is a good solution but not cheap at nearly a ton. I need to decide how much I value the 11/12. I ride 11-28 (8 speed) at the moment and can't understand why that isn't an option on 10 speed as for me it does me well at home and in the big stuff.0 -
the freewheeling on a fast descent is like being chased by a swarm of bees.
i have a DA hub on another set and know what you mean about it being nice and quiet ... though not as good for alerting peds
you could save cash by buying some shimano wheels. Think I saw the Dura Ace SL wheels available for three hundred odd somewhere which would be just as good a wheel if less bling. or even some ultegra wheels.0 -
I'm running campag though WM so thats not an option unfortunately.
I've just spotted a thread on Marchisio cassettes which is now up the top of the board and is worth a read...plus has some other suggestions that might be worth considering.0 -

fair play. you're right it's only doable if you are happy to go down the JTEK shiftmate/conversion cassette route. Personally, I like running campag wheels with campag and shimano with shimano but that's more of an aesthetic thing. Just get the eurus in the 10% off deal!0 -

just because they look good doesn't mean they aren't good! the G3 spoke pattern was the deciding factor for me!0 -

I haven't got my handlebars yet anyway, so I suppose I'm not in a massive rush.
You think - do they need pressed into the headtube? got any pictures or can you still not connect the camera?
in fact - got any pics of all your assembled goodies?0 -

I've got my camera, but I've no idea where the cable is, must be in my flat (at my parent's at the moment). I'll try and get some pictures up on Sunday.
The fork crown race needs putting on - I put it on myself but the steer is slightly too wide at the bottom to allow the fork to sit snuggly with the frame. With it all costing this much I think I'll leave it to the LBS to fit it correctly, rather than me risk buggering it up.
I Think it needs Crown Race Machining.
The Centaur groupset feels really high quality, should feel like a good quality bike when built. Just need to decide on a 11 or 12cm stem and 46cm bars now.0 -
-
no - not yet - I took a trip to ribble cycles on Saturday morning - bought a stem which at least allowed me to put the frame and forks together. I was asking about wheels - and have definately decided on the Eurus - but will order them online cause A) I will save 10% and
becuase they only had black ones in stock at the shop - I want silver ones and I have to admit if they had had the silver ones in I'd have got them..
The eurus are very sweet looking - incredibly light with chunky aluminium spokes (i know I know - not aero, blah blah.....) look the biz!
Was asking about the centaur carbon stuff too - they hav ordered it but it hasn't arrived - probably be 2 to 3 weeks they reckon and I will be able to pick what I want. I could have nipped down to Merlin and got a groupset there but I have decided (I think) that I want the 13-26 cassette and the medium cage to allow additional gear combinations if I see necessary at a later date.
anyway - put the forks together with the stem an spacers - although I haven't cut the steerer yet (bought a new fine blade for my hacksaw though!) Put the rather cool looking s-works colour co-ordinated seatpost in the frame and fitted my white Toupe Saddle. I also fitted the specialized shallow drop bars that came off my langster - which still have the tektro brake levers - which are a campg copy so should be how it 'feels" when together..
this is how it looks at the moment:
how about you - how is your build going? any pics??0 -
oh - forgot to say - for build purposes it is sat on a set of shimano 105 wheels which were previously my summer best wheels - probably up for sale soon!0
-
Quick suggestion Gkerr and other builders. I had a look on youtube and there are a few vids of bike builds done using time elapse. Set your camera to take a pic every minute or so while you build up the bike. Chuck all the pics into movie maker, add a tune and you're away. I'm saving up all my little bits until I have everything and can stick it on at once. Nice little souvenir of your project and good for us to watch.0
-
might not be that good to watch..
could contain swearing, blood, frustration, things getting thrown and the the whole thing ending up on fire.
otherwise it might be a good idea - I intend to take a lot of pictures, but I think my build will take place over a number of days / nights / weeks - i'll see what I can do though.0 -
Got any pics of your silver Eurus yet Gkerr? Just thinking or ordering mine but still wondering wether to go for black or silver. Some close ups would be good to help decide!0
-
not ordered 'em myself yet! - I was hoping to order the centaur at the same time and get the lot from ribble.
Go ahead and get them - they are truly awesome looking in the silver - the black looks OK - but the silver just tops it for me. I think the black looks a little cheap - but the silver with its thick aero silver spokes just look the biz!!
If ribble don't get the centaur in by the end of the month I will order the wheels to take advantage of the 10% off - but since my build is meant to be a summer build (I got a good deal on the frame s got it early) i'm not really in a hurry.
go get them!!!0 -

got them now though - they are lovely!!
You pick them out of the bags and they just don't weigh anything - incredibly light.!
Very smart in the silver - I am glad I went for the silver over the black now - I hate the black rims but with the machined silver braking surface - better all silver in my book - anyway here they are - more pics to follow including how they look on the bike.
in their wee bags as they come0
