New Frame Arrived! - and now another one! - and again!!

I have been hi-jacking various threads over the past few days about frames, wheels and campag centaur groupset deals - thought I should stop that and create my own..

New frame arrived today - only ordered yesterday from Sigma Sport

I have bought a size 54 Specialized S-Works Roubaix frameset in Carbon / Red - it was in the sigma sale reduced from £1400 to £995 which is still a lot of money but I really wanted a roubaix as I like the fit of my (allez Geometry) Langster and with £400 off it seemed like a good deal.


Anyway - it arrived today at work in a massive box that feels like it might just be empty cardboard it is so light!

it is now awaiting me to select a package of campag centaur to go on it, a set of wheels (probably either campag Eurus or Zonda depending on how the budget is looking) and of course the finishing kit.

    Does the bit on the box saying "Warranty void unless assembled by authorised dealer" apply in the case of a self-build?

    Bloody hell, I ordered my frame nearly a week ago, and I'm still waiting for it.

    Got my Neutron Ultras all tyred up already though. I'm still waiting for my groupset aswell, although I only ordered that yesterday.

  • I have recently had an s-works roubaix frame built up. You are going to love it, it's a fantastic bike and a superb ride, look forward to seeing some more pictures, assuming there is something in the box !!!

    Whoo hoo - still excited!
    I didn't get the chance to open it at work - I had a new member of staff start today and she was with me in my office most of the day when the guy from the post room came in. He was aware it was coming as I asked him if I could get it delivered to work - he delivered it with one hand - I think he thought it was an empty box!

    Anyway - unpacked now - what a great looking frame - incredibly light. For you weight weenies - it weighed in (ok - so this was on my dubious accuracy kitchen scales) - the frame came out at a smidge over 1100g with the fork at around 410g

    anyway - you were all waiting for it - so here's another pic - sorry for the poor quality - I took it with my phone - the missus already thought I was crackers using the phone - I daren't get the proper camera out!!

    OK - so really need to get the groupset, wheels and finishing kit sorted to get a test ride in!!

    I really want campag eurus - but cant decide if I should save £160 to get the Zonda's instead. My heart is on the eurus though so perhaps I won't be happy with the zonda's

    Groupset will be campag centaur with the carbon chainset

    I have a set of specialised bars to go on so need to pick a stem an some pedals which will probably be SPD-SL's which are already on my current (winter) bike.

    the frameset includes an s-works pave seatpost and it will get the white 'toupe' saddle from my exisiting bike - probably matched to white cinelli gel bartape

    Very nice (and more than a little jealous).

    I don't recall where (may have been Edinburgh Bike Co-op) but I saw a few of last years S-Work Roubaix frames for a bit of a bargain price and thought about a custom-build to go with my DT 1850 wheels.

    I currently ride an Allez so both the Roubaix and Tarmac appealed to me. Haven't ruled another Specialized bike out but I do quite fancy going a bit silly on something a bit more exclusive like a Wilier Izoard or an Orbea Orca.

    I do find myself looking at the 2008 Tarmac Pro with those funky Roval Fusee star hubs. I just don't like the £2,600 price.

    There are a few places with the 07 frames on offer - the cheapest I found was at sigma sport for 995, jejames have them at 1099 and cyclestore had them at 1049. I took the last size 54 from sigma in the carbon red, but I could have had a quickstep colour one in 54 if I;d have wanted it.

    The tarmac is a sweet bike - but the s-works version is even more racy geometry than the more std models and my main aim is fitness, leisure and sportive riding so the roubaix suited me best (I had a thread on here entitled tarmc vs roubaix as my original plan was a tarmac elite / comp).

    The other factor was that I wanted to do a self-buld project - mainly becuase I enjoy tinkering with bikes, but also because I get to use the parts I actually want rather than the bits which fit a price point, if youknow what I mean, and I think the s-works roubaix frameset is a steal at 995!

    What's the budget for your build?

    Mine was roughly £1300-1400

    And after finding the wheels with £40 off and the groupset ~£90 off it's dragged me back into my budget ~£1370 (excluding tools of course).

    my budget is (was) £1800

    but a grand on the frame, £400 for the centaur and potentially £360 for the Eurus doesn;t keave a lot for a stem, pedals, tyres and bar tape (I have a set of bars and a saddle already to use and the frameset came with a seatpost)

    I do need a couple of campaq specific tools - the cassette lockring tool and the ultratorque long allen key thing (might not need that?) - I have the hollowtech2 spanner which I believe fits the UT cups too,

    I'd also like some bits to help me do it right - decent threadlock and anti-sieze grease along with carbon assembly compound.

    I can see it breaking budget - the question is do I buy Zonda wheels to prevent this happening or do I allow the build to to over by £150ish to get the wheels that I want...




    (I think we all know the answer to that one don't we...)

    oh that said - I also don't mind waiting a couple of months as this was intended to be a summer bike build project - it's just that 30% off frame offers don't come along every day.

    so I guess I can afford to wait a little and add a bit more cash to the fund

    Even if I finished the bike this weekend, i';d have to try and refrain from riding it in the salt strewn crappy roads we have at the moment!

    I wasn't planning on buying a bike until spring/summer either, but I had the money and I kept looking at bikes, but I was dissappointed at the poor level on kit of even bikes for £1600+. Shimano R550 wheels on a £2000 bike?

    Carbon frame, centaur, decent wheels for £1300? Can't be bought prebuilt, priced it up myself and it turned out it was easily doable. I've got a loose budget anyway really, If I had waited until spring I would have had over £2000 to spend on a bike and possibly wouldn't have got a better one than I'm building.

    Long allen key?

    yeah - don't you need a long allen key to torque up the bold in the middle of the BB - that holds the two halves of the cranset together? Campag list it as a specific tool (it's only £7) - but I think it is just a big long allen key...

    I know what you mean about the spec of bikes - exactly what I meant bu "price point" - an expensive frame with a half decent groupset and then with £50 wheels?? - I guess they know that your average enthusiast cyclist is already considering an upgrade before he or she even buys the bike!

    You have done very well to stay <£1400 btw. does that include finishing kit? what have you went for? I noticed your thread on bar / stem combos!

    Chorus Seatpost (£60 - can't remember where I saw that though)

    Bars and Stem hopefully for around £70 - haven't decided yet which to go for - don't really know what stem length I need. I'm all for rushing off and buying the remaining stuff, but better judgement is restraining me - I think I need to wait until I get the 3 main components together before I make a final decision on the remaining parts.

    I haven't included tyres, bar tape, or pedals as I already had them lying around.

    I had already bought two Carbon Centaur bottle cages in anticipation of buying a new bike back in December.

    carbon centaur bottle cages eh - thats an extravagence!!! (nice though - I have a birthday coming up and will be dropping all sorts of hints about those!)

    Thats quite an expensive seatpost too - do you need a 31.7mm dia? is there not a centaur carbon one to go with the rest of the group?

    If I were you (and this is what I am doing!) i'd buy some really quite cheap bars and stem at the moment - you can get cinelli Vai stuff for under very cheap and this will allow you to experiment with different stem lengths and angles as well as bar reach and drop (they are all different and small changes in reach and drop on a bar make a big difference to the riding position). once you have the right size of stem picked and you are happy with the geometry of the bars understood and happy with them, then you can look to get something a "bit fancier" in the summer - perhaps a nice carbon set - plus you will have got over the capital outlay of the original build prject and lets face it - what else needs upgrading on the bikes we are building here??

    I'm trying to match the geometry I've got on my bike now, 9cm stem at the moment, but I think I need a 11cm stem to keep the reach the same, with possibly a 1cm or so spacer under the stem (compared to nothing under the stem on my current bike). When I first got my old bike it had 12cm stem and 2cm of spacers under the stem - and I was comfortable, so I think I've got a good range to aim for, making my stem choice a bit easier.

    I'm quite adaptable on the bike position wise, but I've got very wide shoulders for my height, 46cm (o-o) bars are a must, compared to the 40/42 bars that normally come on bikes my size.

    I can't find a centaur seatpost anywhere, although they must exist with them being shown on pictures of the groupset. 31.8mm is the seatpost size for the Nero.

    The long allen key is to fix the two halves of the ultratorque chainset together. The hex bolt that needs to be tightened is deep within the hollow bottom bracket axle - hence you need a special long allen key or a 10mm hex bit on an extension, attached to a torque wrench. The latter is by far the best way to go - I've read about problems with these things coming apart, probably because people don't follow the instructions or have the right tools for the job. It needs to be torqued to a high value - 371 inch lbs according to Park in that link I left youin the other thread - I would get the official campag instructions which are buried somewhere on their website.

    I think you were given a bum steer in the other thread btw - someone said standard halford's hex bits on a torque wrench are fine for installing UT BBs - unless the Halfords hex bits are extrordinarliy long, they won't be.

    My tool recommendation (this is what I bought and they've performed faultlessly) is as follows: Teng 3/8 socket set (includes extension):

    Plus the Park 60-600 inch pounds torque wrench that I think you already have.

    The Teng socket set is a bit pricey but lovely, you can get cheaper, but remember you need a set with a socket extension!

    The UT cranksets used to come pre-coated with threadlocker, so you shouldn't need to buy any - it's pricey stuff. If you do, Loctite 243 is what you need.

    Finally, remember not to put conventional grease or anti-seize on anything carbon but, hey, you knew that!

    thanks rob - thats helpful stuff.

    The teng toolset is nice - I have a Makita set along the same lines which should be ok - although I do need the hex-bits

    So do the bottom bracket cups come pre-threadlocked too? and these then get applied without any grease / anti-sieze - seems a bit odd to me!

    I knew not to use conventional grease on the carbon! - but I am curious about the carbon prep stuff - think it is needed?

    reddraaggon - you sound pretty sorted with the geometry then - I think I am nearly there too but I am going to use a set of specialised bars that I have kicking around (from my langster when I put aero bars on) and was planing getting a cheap stem to ensure the reach was o befor going for something like the new Cinelli Neo Morphe bars / stem combo in the summer!

    I am sure I have come across the centaur setpost somewhere on my search for the lowest groupset price - but I have looked at so many shops now I can't remember where I saw it!!
  • Being ignorant of all things carbon what grease do you use? Is it different again for carbon to carbon componenets from that of carbon to metal parts??
