They're great. But don't let anyone tell you that they're waterproof. They're not. In fact they're not even shower proof. But they're still great.
    More problems but still living....

Agree. Great summer jacket that can easily fit in a pocket.
Not waterproof and no use in the colder temps (like this week).

    Not very breathable either.

So, not breathable, not showerproof but a great jacket.

Actually iit is very windproof and very small so I suppose that makes it good
  • They are pretty waterproof. I wore one riding through a thunderstorm for an hour and it never leaked. However, they seem to loose their coating quickly so you need to reproof them pretty often.
  • I have one and its showerproof at best. Now I wish I had got the H20 one they do. Its not a s breathable and slightly bigger pack size but apparently does the job.

I think its great as an "emergency" one to stuff in your pocket, but I wouldnt use it in this freezing weather, OR in torrential rain.
And, as with most waterproofs, its not breathable.

if the velo is not very good what is the best breathable jacket
  • It depends on you and the type of riding you do.

i find all properly waterproof jackets - no matter how breathable they say they are - make be 'boil in the bag' unless its less than about 10 degrees. The best compromise i have come accross for me is a Gore Xenon jacket. it is completley windproof and almost completely waterproof. during the very heavy rain we had recently it only just started to let some water through after about 40 minutes but even then it was minimal and it still kept the chill out. i particularly like it because it's very lightweight so it helps minimise the overheating effect and it stows away easily. it also has excellent reflective strips front and back and a very long 'tail' to keep your backside dry.

if you don't overheat too much then the most breathable (comparing technical data with other jackets) totally waterproof jacket i've seen is the Endura Stealth jacket but i've not actually tried one.

  • always a breathability/ waterproof trade off.
montane velo seems to loose on both fronts...
about as waterproof as a tshirt but oddly sweaty
also flaps around /fills with air in the wind (but maybe mine is just too big)

Like someone else mentioned, it's a great ''shove in the back pocket in case '' jacket.Mine was quite waterproof at first, but now just does enough to keep the worst off. Gets sweaty if going silly hard, or uphill, and flaps around a bit, but coz it's so small packing, lives in whatever pocket is with me!
  • Bought a Montane windproof from TKMAX on holiday (for running, but has a quarter length zip at half the price of the cycling spec one.It packs up really small. Much smaller than the cycling specific one.
Both are really good, breathable wind blocks, great to stuff in a pocket if you think weather is likely to change.
    Both good value, worth recomending.
