Are we talking about Clim-8 brakes? If we are, by stiffer do you mean more on/off than progressive?

If you do, you'll struggle. Multi-pot brakes like the Clim-8 are designed to be progressive. Trials riders prefer a wooden on/off brake as it allows you to stop instantly. It's all down to the actuation ratio.

Multi pot brakes have pairs of pistons which differ in size. As you squeeze the lever, the hydraulic pressure in the system increases. The smallest piston in the caliper moves out first as it is under the highest pressure, followed by the next pair and so on. The difference is only minute but it's enough to make the action of the brake progressive rather than what is described as "wooden".

A dedicated trials brake (such as the Hope Mono Trials) has lever and caliper pistons which are similar in size so the actuation ratio is virtually 1:1 giving the "on/off" feel.
