Please help with spec for build....

Firstly, thank you in advance!

Secondly I need help with what equipment to buy....basically I do not know what is good stuff & how expensive I should go compared to the rest of the kit that I already have. It is all a bit of a mish-mash but I think that I will get a decent spec build out of this.

I have a planet-x Kaffenback frame and their steel fork to build up. I have accumulated some kit from a good source at a good price. This first list is what I have already, all of this kit except for the mudguards came from a 2006 Focus Cayo so is of pretty decent quality and is virtually unused costing me £160.

FSA mega-exo bottom bracket
FSA Gossamer Compact cranks
FSA SP-SL-280 seatpost
selle italia saddle
FSA HB-RD-300 drop bars
mudguards
Ultegra chain
shimano WH-R550 rims
FSA OS-170 Stem

As above, I am going to build up with drop bars and thus plan on getting shimano 105 for the STI levers, front & rear derailleurs and cassette.( Unless anyone can convince me that Tiagra is a good enough option.)

So I think I need the following.

Headset
Seat post clamp
Front & rear V brakes as it only comes with canti brake mounts(Do I need mini-Vs or can I use some kind of converter - I want to fit mudguards so need clearance from the brakes)
Brake cables, inners & outers
Gear cables, inners and outers
Downtube barrel adjusters
Spacers

Have I missed anything, and could anyone help me out with either the sort of price I should be looking to pay for a middle of the road item in each category or suggest an actual make / model?

Thanks!

    Headset

cheap: FSA XL2, or Cane creek S2 see CRC or ebay £25
    further up: Hope
Best: King see ebay £65 for the States

    Seat post clamp: Hope? Salsa?

Front & rear V brakes - Normal Vs will need a Travel Agent with STIs, which are generally viewed with contempt. Mini Vs sound a better bet but I've never used them.

Brake cables, inners & outers - standard shimano outer and cables are usually fine. See LBS. Use a decent cable cutter!

Gear cables, inners and outers - Again Shimano are okay. Perhaps look at the mtb cables for better sealing if you're going to get the bike muddy. Gore Ride-Ons are the best though. Not cheap but they run super smooth for years. I wouldn't use anything else...

Downtube barrel adjusters - no experience here

Spacers - for ? Headset? Any cheap carbon ones off ebay/CRC will do.

Your other kit looks okay. Just check the weight of the FSA post. I seem to remember they are v. heavy but I may be thinking of a different post. Tiagra mechs are fine. Cable quality makes a bigger difference than mech grade IME.

  • Thanks MadDog - that is all I need, just a little point in the right direction.

The bit that I forgot when I was building up a bike was the cable director that fits underneath the bottom bracket and directs the cables.
