Creaking Stumpjumper

Hi
I've just bought a used 06 Stumpjumper FSR Expert that's in good nick, but I need earplugs when riding it! The damn thing creaks and squeaks when I ride it. Is this a known Stumpie habit, or do I need to be taking the pivots apart for a good greasing/replacement?
Cheers
Jimmy

The bike had been serviced before I bought it and was in good nick when I put it together. The seatpost was well lubed, but I didn't look too hard at the drop outs. I'll give it a go!0

I've got a 2007 stumpy FSR elite. It went through a phase of creaking, apparently it is a problem with stumpys.
Found a number of threads across the tinternet giving all sorts of reasons.
Tracked mine down to dirty pivots around the bottom bracket, cleaned them properly (just with a park tools brush, didn't disassemble or anything) and the creak went away. Haven't had a problem since. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

my old 06 Stumpy had the same problem it was from the pivots around the bottom bracket also........http://www.sketchymtb.co.uk/Blah.pl the new XC in Kent

Did stripping the pivots and lubing them solve the problem? Is it the kind of thing you can do at home, or should I take it to the shop?0

Didn't actually strip the bottom pivots, just got a stiff brush and some muck off in to clean out all the crap. Have since stripped all the other pivots myself. Not diffiuclt, just don't round anything off, remember which order the spacers and bearings fit togther in.
Found it a bit fiddily putting it back together (third hand, i.e. wife can be useful).
Just take your time and make sure you know what order it came apart in.
That said my mate had our LBS strip his Enduro, didn't cost much and he said it made it feel like a new bike (he doesn't actually clean his between rides so there was a lot of improvement to be had ).It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

The bike is in the shop at the moment being serviced, and they are trying to tell me that there is a crack in the frame. Only problem is, they can't see the crack, but they are adamant the frame's fractured. That was until I pointed them in the direction of this thread and they have started backpedalling (sorry, bad choice of phrase) and saying that it's probably fine.
The bike shop in question is just a very local bike shop, and not an MTB specialist. They hadn't heard of the "Specialist Stumpjumper" before, but as all I needed was a new set of gear cables......................
So, I am inclined to go with the advice on this forum and take the bike to a local Specialized dealer at the weekend to get the pro's verdict. If the frame is intact then I will just have to live with it I guess, but will be pissed if the frame's knackered.
I'll keep you posted!!0 -
Might be a link with this thread as well  .
