  • One of my neighbours where I used to live, years ago, made a BMX frame for his son by cutting down and welding a road frame.
Old 531 framed bikes seem to go pretty cheap on Ebay. That may be a good source of tubes if you are trying to self build a frame on the cheap..
I am a mountain biking god.
    Unfortunately, my bike's an atheist.
  • I have done a few in the past. Cost of materials is not to bad. But unless you have the basic skill level and equipment you never going to make a half good job of it. So don’t think of it as a cheap way of getting a bike. If you just want to have a go I say do it. It can be great fun but be prepared for a disaster. The last one I did it was not me that welded it as quite frankly I’m ok but not great with the Tig torch. In the past I have played with carbon, steel and alloy so if you need any help feel free to send me a PM

cutting down 531 or any other butted tube could be a recipe for disaster. Dont forget the wall is VERY thin in the centre sectiion and only meaty at the ends. Welding would not be suggested for the thin walled tubes as it may lead to failure. (Part of the reason expensive steel tubes used to be brazed is the heat could be better controlled).

Other issues are getting correct allignment on the frame etc. You may have fun building it but its not likely you would have fun riding the creation.

    YMMV
