My Apollo just fell to bits.

I've killed it dead. It's a crap bike I know but I expected it to last more than 3 months ;) It is (was) an Apollo FS 26.

The rear brakes have disintegrated completely, the cassette is bent and I bent the rear wheel.

This is from riding round the park a few times and about 6 miles up and down the streets locally. It still has the nobblies on the tyres it's that "unused".

Is the bike really that shite or have I just mistreated it? Is someone likely to buy it even though it's kind of dead?

    This one?

To be frank its a load of shite. I wouldn't go near a full suspension bike unless you are considering spending £1000+
  • If you want a FS bike thats going to last you going to have to spend a lot more than £100
  • No no no even cheaper crap than that.

    It's a bag of shite I know.

It is actually my first (!) bike at 27 years of age. I bought it to see "if i could learn to ride" (which I could actually after about 20 mins of falling off).

Expected it to last a bit longer. Will fix it up as best as possible and let someone on gumtree have it *choke*.

Fortunately my employer will do the cycle to work scheme thing so i've got a 500 quid budget to blow on a half decent bike :)
  • They still make 6 speed cassettes o_O

The difference with any of the bikes there will be phenomenal.

man did that 2008 apollo crap out on you after 3 months ? I had the 2006 model and the only thing that made it shite was the gripsh*t gear levers that untangled after 3 miles which the engineer gladly replaced with rapidfire . Other than that , mine was a joy to ride and it It lasted for a year with no problems although I did do some "creative" upgrading along the way http://prowlus.deviantart.com/art/Upgra ... t-33703373

 So sue me , I was foolish at that time and I still miss her despite having a real full suss . If i ever get the chsnce I'd bag one for street riding and leave my full suss for XC runs
  • Nice.

    FYI it's one of these buggers: http://www.halfords.com/wcsstore/Halfor ... 920330.jpg

I've just spent 2 hours rebuilding the brakes and have discovered that it's my eyes that are bent and not the cassette. I've chucked on a replacement wheel from Halfords.

Seems that it's mostly fallen apart due to crap assembly in the first place (out of box). Deraillers need major adjustment as it wont shift between 1/2 on the front and 5/6 on the rear. Apart from that it feels a lot more solid now.

Appears to be an "okish" bike which was just part-assembled by monkeys at the factory.

Taking it round the block now (wife not happy!)

Still chucking it and getting an old git comfy commuter bike though.

Is there any way of getting discs on the back - the thing currently has calipers which are ... crap!

I don't think it's worth putting discs on it, you need disc compatable hubs & frame.

You get more stopping power out of a front brake anyway, if you were it put a disc in it's best up front, but it looks like your forks don't have a disc mount.

Save your money for a new bike.

  • That was the idea by the looks.

I was just toying with the idea of upgrading it slowly as it's easier on the ears (I am married).
  • There will be nothing on that bike worth keeping and any parts you do put on it will be severly limited by the frame. I don't think you get just how bad a bike that cheap is :p

If you want a cheap way of improving your braking buy a new set of pads. You'll get a pair for less than £5.

Read through some of the "which bike" sections, and you'll soon see, that with your budget, you can get a GREAT, light hardtail. Or a so-so full-susser.

And don't forget, lots of people on the bike2work scheme with Halfords have been able to get them to order other bikes in apart from the, er, limited selection of decent bikes they stock.

Oh, and don't forget to make sure everything is tight/straight/connected when you pick your bike up
  • Well I just took it out for a bit - did a couple of miles - feels better now. Still a bag of crap.

Any recommendations of where to shift it? Gumtree looks like the better place at the moment.

They'll let me do the bike to work thing where I work so i'll do that. Not sure what the turn around is on that so I might have to live with the thing for a bit.

chuck it in the bin, save up for a few months or so, get a nice hardtail for about 300/400 quid, then you'll be well on the way to having a sweet bike!!

failing that, save up for ages/get a loan/get a divorce/sell something expensive and get yourself a nice downhill huck for a couple of G's!!!
  • It's going in the bin by the looks anyway - was out on it last night and managed to total my ankle on a drain cover. That's my fault but I just can't be bothered now. I'm going to be off it for a month anyway and on foot for two weeks after that I reckon (just so I don't fuck it some more).
