I like my Altura Altitude trousers, the seems are not taped so they are not waterproof but the material is proofed quite well and they shrug off all but the heaviest down pours.

If your less image concious a pair of bib tights will serve you well in the cold. I find the more weather proof trousers are the more you are going to sweat like a pig unless reall its cold as well.

The ideal solution would be a 3/4 waterproof bagee, to keep your arse dry and knees warm. and if need be you could add some leg warmers.

But ah, I see Altura do that now for the princely some of £100 !!!!!!!! with out a liner.

Ronhill do thin or thick trousers for about £20. (Bikesters or DX Bikesters). Halfords do waterproof trousers for £15. Ronhills are great but the Halfords overtrousers are a bit cumbersome and not at all breathable. One shop has waterproof cycling trousers - a proprietary brand -on ebayfor £30. Remember that you only get what you pay for wth cycling gear. Endura are the bees-knees in trousers.

I've noticed a lot of the trousers on CRC/wiggle etc say about them really only being "urban" and "commute". These are the endura ones mainly. Would any of these be suitable for XC?
    eg.
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=9363 endura Humvee trousers. I swear I have the humvee shorts and they're XC?

I'd be happy if they're like the shorts I got, absolutely great for XC riding. Just I dunno if these would be more suited to urban commuting... dunno what the difference would be but thought i'd check

I personally hate riding in trousers so I just use Nike running tights/leggings that are tight fitting with my Fox midranger shorts over the top.

Never had a problem with this combo even in wet / below freezing conditions.

I prefer to keep upper body / head / hands warmer as my legs are doing most of the work anyway

ive never liked the idea of anything tight to my legs, i thought it would look a bit gay ive got lycra shorts for comfort but they are always covered with some knee lengh shorts. im not going to buy anything like tights unless there cheap cos if i look like a dick i wont care about not wearing em cos they wouldnt cost much

buy something tight and wear your normal shorts over the top hiding the embarrasing bits

no one cares about calves showing up under lycra

thats what i do anyway, works even better with 3/4 length trousers and bog standard thermal bottoms

Ditto here. Got some full length tights (cycling ones, transvestitism is for the bedroom or when alone  ) and wear shorts over the top. Keep nice and warm so far , but there again it isn't so cold at the moment. NOt sure how these will feel in a few months.

But only when there is snow on the ground.

    Shorts for all other weather!

    Waterproof - who needs it, that's what skin is for . . . .

  • If your not worried about water proof then i suggest something like these:
    http://www.zimbabalooba.co.uk/catalogue.asp
They are quite loose and will accomodate a "nappie" as my other half calls them and they also taper at the bottom so shouldn't get caught in the cogs.
