Hi all.

I am going to go to wales soon and wondered what is the best trail centre for single track. I was thinking Afan....and yes i have looked at the mtbwales site and just got more confused so would like real life opionons please.

Cheers

  • i'd agree and say afan, seemed alot more flowing to me rather than places like coed y bren...(sp???).

favourite trail is whites level but its pretty short so could tie it in with another in the same day, or use it as a morning ride.

Afan is good, I prefer the Penhydd trail to the Wall.

<3 Afan trails. They have just opened up the new Energy trail which looked good. The first propper descent on Whites is just sexual!

I'll see you at the end.

You'll see me on the floor.
  • i like the final descent, pretty much starts at the black run and carrys on all the way to the fireroad taking you back to the car park, it makes you forget about the climb to get you up there in the first place.

all this talk of afan makes me want to get back over there this weekend...

dirtbiker100 and afan 4eva. ha. whites level is such a great trail. and a lot of people talk about the wall with its final descent. i'm doing cwmcarn this afternoon, its a good trail but crap in comparison to afan. i'm keen to get over to the others in north west wales but it seems more people talk about afan. don't know if thats down to location or the trails but i love it. the descents are such good fun and they really do make you forget about the climb. unlike cwmcarn where its hard to forget that bast**d of a climb
  • cwmcarn worse than afan climb??!! must be bad bad lol
  • anyone know how long it takes to get there from South London area at a reasonable speed e.g 50-60mph as i will be going in a camper van??

Also anyone know any bike frendly places to stay with or with out camper van. (if its a camper site i will have to cycle to the trail centre)

Im a wales virgin you see :D

    Thanks again

  • i'm sure i saw tents camping in the area right next to the centre last time i was at afan, check on the website. not sure how long from london but it's about 45 mins from bristol at 70+ mph

Not too sure about where to stay but its easy to get too especially for you, hop onto the M4 and stay on it, over the bridge (5.10? 5.70? for a car) till port talbot then go north for about 15 mins.

cwmcarn climb is described in a littl ebook i got from mbwales as such:
The opening climb of 'Mabinogion' stiches a tightly weaving course back and forth across a stream rushing back down as you struggle upwards. then - and its only fair to warn you - it really kicks in... The great news is that once you've recovered your breath/sight/breakfast (delete as applicable) the climbing is pretty much over and the swooping rollercoaster trails make incredible use of the height you've gained
its fairly long, steep and pretty technical in places. Afan doesn't compare, it goes up a fair way but its an easy climb skill and steepness wise. Innerleithen in Scoootland goes up and up and up but thats an easy climb in skill too.

yes there is somewhere to stay. right at the trail head of whites level and the skyline trail. Literally you cannot camp closer to a trail head.
