Does anyone here get flak from the make of their bike they puchase as much as me?
One week ago I wanted to shop aound to upgrade and "tweak" my 2007 cannondale prophet 4 . It seems that every cycle store (with the exception of evans) seems to get their kicks at poking fun at my full suss .
At action bikes in embankment , they branded my bike a "crackenfail" implying that their suprised it hasn't broken in two after 8 months. Cycle sugery said the thing had "obsolete single pivot suspension geometry" calling the 2008 versions as "worser scrimping than 2007 offers" and at earl's court cycle show, a hard tailer on a trek asked me "did my lefty break aleady?"
Why is cannondale really that much hated in most of the south east? Or is it jealousy that my frame has the most cleanest weld joints ever offered for a bike in the 1000 pound category?

It used to be that Cannondale removed far too much material when filing the welds down, leaving them weakened.

I have a couple of friends with cannondales, seems they are a bit like Marmite as far as opinions go.
    Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
    Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
    Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

  • Heh! imagine how i feel when i take my Caldera substitute into LBS or even out in public.

It's a diamondback s-10. i think the worst comment i've heard is 'revolting piece of pig-iron'
TBH that about sums it up!
I hate it when people say David Beckham's stupid...its not like anyone ever says: 'Stephen Hawking - he's s**t at football.' Paul Calf

sorry you will just have to learn to deal with the jibes just in the same way a skoda owner has to deal with theirs. cannondale did have the view that everyone was out to get them but they have fired a lot of people to try and get rid of the bad apples within the company which they had a fair few of. this is the first year they have stepped up and are now trying to compete against the big boys. but as far as that shop saying they have oudated geometry tell them to stick it up their arse.

I got that all the time when I had my faith. it was usually, oh couldn't you afford a glory? (Or team dh). Took the p*ss really. no bike shops ripped it though, they were just amazed by the spec 8)

The LBS told me that my old frame, '04 Hardrock would be better used as an anchor than a bike :?
  • Most areas of human endeavour have their fair share of gear snobbery - there's always someone who'll react with utter disgust / horror / condescending pity that you would ride / play / use a type of bike / guitar / other kit that doesn't conform to the prevailing norm.

If you're happy with the bike, what on earth has it got to do with the "bikier than thou" brigade at the LBS what it is? F*ck 'em, says I.
Even if the voices aren't real, they have some very good ideas.

If you like it and it ain't broken then who cares.

I used to be heavily into modified Japanese cars and you wouldn't believe the amount of badge snobbery attached to that industry, vast amounts of it originated in the US and crossed the pond via the internerd.

There were plenty of parts that did the job just as well as the big buck branded part but people shunned them.

I chose to do my own thing, won respect and acclamation had a cover feature on a world wide distributed mag and several other features to boot. It comes down to doing what you want with what you like

In the 90s, the amount of admiring glances and comments I got about my Zaskar were amazing. Now people do take the piss out of the 'relic' - but is me who has the laugh last as I beat them down the trails non my 80mm hardtail as they grind away on heavy 6 inch full bouncers!

The only person who needs to like your bike is yourself.

Nothing really wrong with Cannondales either, if you cycle in the Lake District much you'd see that they're very popular XC bikes indeed so they must be doing something right to handle that kind of terrain (not to mention the weather swings up there)

My 2003 Cove Stiffee FR is now probably considered well out of date with old pre-Mono Hope Minis on it and running 120mm travel on my Pikes. I couldn't give a toss if anyone smirks at it in comparison to their full XTR bike because I still think it's the best hardtail I've ever had so I'll keep it until I break it.
