SPD wise I'd get some cheap Shimano one's, very reliable, easy to clip in, you can grab some M520s for about £20 from a lot of places.
I'd advise getting proper shoes rather than semi casual hybrids, they make look a bit silly at first but you need a very rigid sole to use as a platform, coupled with very tight grip on your foot. I use some Specialized BG Sport shoes 3/4 times a week and love them.
Oh and try on the SPD shoes, I've had some Shimanos and some Specialized, both seemed very odd sizing, the Specialized I use now are very small for their claimed size.0 -

Just a suggestion but perhaps you could have a search of the forum before posting, theres at least 8 threads posted this month with regards to SPDs!]0 -
Chain Reaction have a good shoe sale on at the moment so there's some good deals to be had. Personally I've had a pair of 661 Stingers for the last 12 months and I'd definately recommend them, as for pedals I agree with Toasty a cheap pair of Shimanos will do the job nicely0

TIME TIME TIME
How many TIMEs do I have to say it.
They are just so much better for your knees than SPDs; more float and they don't clog as much......0 -
Why would you buy that roadie stuff! SPD are fantastic! Pleanty of float and they clear very easily! Been riding for 12 years with them and they get better with every new release! M520 or M540's and you can't go wrong!2011 Yeti ASR5 carbon: http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/5817307/

and eventually they'll be as good as Time ATACs, but why wait that long?0 -
The only spuds u ever need to buy are the 520's at 20squid a set or if u really have to have somethin a tiny bit lighter, the 540's. Ive been using the 520's for 4 now on 2 bikes and really have had no complaints at all with them.0
