Higher (smaller) gears slipping with new cassette and chain

I fitted a new XT derailleur, chain, cassette and cables last night. Set up the H and L settings, B settings etc. Indexed the gears and all seemed fine in the stand. Going up and down the block in appropriate chainrings were fine. So went out to Cannock Chase tonight. I can shift quickly and easily between gears, and can pedal with confidence on lower (smaller) cogs. However, as I get about half way towards the smallest cog, I get frequent false shift - about one every ten seconds under normal pedaling.
I know it will need readjusting to handle initial cable stretch, but i wouldn't have thought that would affect only some gears. My other concern is any possible chainline issues. The bike is a standard build and the components replaced are like for like in terms of chainline. Could worn suspension bearings have an impact in reliable shifting. The frame seems solid with little wear but I just don't know!!
Any ideas before I take the bike into shop to get the paid gurus on the case?

Just to be clear...
Lower gears are larger. Also, if you get more slip as you are heading towards the smaller (higher) sprockets, I'm assuming you get slip in the higher gears but OK in the lower ones.
Could you please clarify this ?Whyte PRST-1 Works Special (+ carbon everywhere)

Not using the small front chainring with small rear cog are we?0

Definitely no stiff links, that seems fine and I only used middle and big rings yesterday - surprising I managed to stay out of granny ring!!! This problem occurred equally on both rings.
Also, to clarify, this only occurs in the higher / smaller cogs from around halfway down the cassette - got my cogs mixed up!!!0 -
Chain not too long? Seems you're getting issues when chain tension is at it's lowest. Also are you sure your B-screw adjustment is OK (i.e. not too big a gap between cassette and top jockey wheel)?0

Cheers for suggestion on chain length. I set the new chain to same length as old, though I might be able to take a couple of links out. The B-screw if anything maybe slightly too close to the cogs though it certainly doesn't touch!!0

I had this exact problem recently on a new bike & was caused by a stiff link.
Edit - sorry just read the whole discussion & I can see you've already ruled out a stiff link0
