Just wondering which back pack people are using, i want one that will hold Tools, Inertube, Sarnies, and my fleece under jacket amongst other things, like everything else there is just too much choice and would like to narrow it down to what you guys consider the best and most popular. Cheers.

I've got the Camelbak MULE - it should hold all that and has a 3 liter bladder
I got it for 50 notes from wiggle (with voucher + discount)
Only taken it out twice but it felt really good :)

Yeah i've seen them bladder things, out of interest are they better than a normal rack and bottle.
  • Hi, if you're not looking to spend a fortune, i recommend a Karrimor Silhouette backpack that i recently purchased from Millets for an incredibly cheap £19.99. It's pretty comfy and has thickly padded straps and back, which stops locks/tools etc from digging/slamming into you; it's also immensely tough and i can't see it getting torn by stray branches etc. There are definitely better bags out there for more cash, but i've found the simple rugged ones to last much longer than the more expensive "mesh-backed-ultra-breathable" ones that cost well over twice as much.

now I'm doing longer rides having more than 1 litre of water is essential not to mention that the weight of it is right between your shoulders and hips rather then down by the cranks...

also means that I stop less as I can just drink on the go much more easily

I love it - wouldn't go back to bottles

    I have this :
    http://www.pembsoutdoors.co.uk/index.as ... oductid=15

I brought it from a "outdoorsy" shop where i live for £20 just over a year ago. Very useful, can hold everything u need for a longer ride. Bladder is good, with bite valve. Because you dont need to fiddle round with bottles, its much easier to drink and u find urself taking on more fluids which is good for u :) I have the silver/white one though rather than blue

    i have 2.

mtb pack is a dakine nomad with 3ltr bladder. its got 19litre of storage in the main part and then i tool poket at the front even has a fleecy lined pouch for glasses or phone ect. you can fit your helmet on the front to and pads,.. its so confy to war when ridingto well supported with 2 retaining straps..

my commute pak is a regatta survivor 35. 35 litre of storage plenty of room i have a camel bak bladder in it it fits neatly down the back of the bag into a zipped compartment( its not supposed to hold a bladder but fits perfectly) it has loads of pockets to for tools tubes ect,. even has a water proof cover,..
its very big and cumbersome i have used it to mtb a few times but its kind of big and clumsy its got 2 retenion straps chest and stomach. i only use thyis to commute as i need a big bag to get all uniform in ect..

my bro has the dakine apex simlar to the nomad but bigger 25 litre i think it to is a great pak bladder and tool compartment.

I know halfords sell them, and thought they may have been a bit of a gimmik, will try one for definate now though, Cheers,
  • Millets are an outdoors store in the UK that are held in wide disregard due to the incompetance of their staff, they're a bit like the Halfrauds of the hiking world. Having said that, they occasionally have some decent stuff but generally it's not biking specific. They do have an online store and here is the backpack i was talking about:

    http://www.millets.co.uk/millets.storef ... ay%20Sacks

Their stores are pretty widespread so there's probably one in the nearest large town.

    HELL YEAH!

I actually have a Berghaus Bladdered which is rather small for your needs but I've had it donkeys now and it's still going strong.

The Mules tend to be tough and rugged and I've had my eye on them for some time... but, if you're after a pack that's got more capacity AND is tough and rugged then you could look at the Camelback HAvok - they have a large capacity (for your fleece and butties)
plus they expand to fit helmets and pads easily, I used one doing Snowdon- the bladdered just wouldn't carry everything I needed. they aint cheap though!

    THere's one going on ebay:

How strange? I thought they were a national chain, they're owned by BLACKS and are an Outdoor chain, make all those nasty EUROHIKE tents you see trashed at the end of music festivals...?

Odd question coming up, but can you fit ice cubes down the part where you fill it so as to keep any drink you might have cold.

I've got a mule max gear gear from army surplus that was really cheap 8.8ltr storage and 3ltr bladder. Its a great pack slightly different from the normal mule as it holds a little less but I love it.

As baccaman21 says the Havok is worth a look with 13l storage & a 3l bladder. I'm probably going to get a Mayhem 11.5ltr storage and 3ltr bladder as a replacement for the mule as the wife has taken a fancy to it.

Value for money you can not get better than the Gelert, they have them in Motor World and I think there is a shop in just about every town.

The bag is as good a quality as a camelbak, just purchase a camblebak bladder when the one you get with this comes to the end of its life.

camelbak chaos i think here. great bag, 9L storage and 3L water. very tough too, as my crashes will testify!

you can in mine, 'cos i always put a whole tray of them in it. Mine's a rockrider which was about £23 from decathlon (their own brand i think). The one thing it hasn't got which I wouldn't have minded is waist belt pockets for keys and stuff but it's great otherwise.
  • I actually use one from Aldi that I got bought at Christmas (a tenner?)

Never bothered with thte bladder but the bag is great - stood up to nearly nine months of pretty hard regular riding..

Cheap doesn't always equal shite.

  • I use a Berghaus daysac - has straps around waist and chest so doesn't bounce around all over the place - not bike specific but does the job!

I bought a Highland backpack from range - it's small but has a 2 litre bladder with a good bite valve - Only cost me £10 and has done me proud all summer. Also has alittle fold out bit for carrying helmet and enough space for spares, folded up jacket and tools.

    A blinkin' bargain! :D

I use a Camelbak Blowfish which is the best compromise I could find between being big enough for stuff I wanted but not too cumbersome. I generally just keep a rain jacket, wallet, phone and food in the main compartment and iPod, keys, multitool in the mini compartment. Still got plenty of room left over.

No need to worry about ice cubes either, just keep it in the freezer between rides with a bit of water in it (no more than 1/3rd full IMO else the ice takes hours to melt during a ride). Stops mould growth to.

I just got a 1.5L Bell hydration pack from Asda for £14. It's pretty good actually. Really minimal so great if all you need to carry is a couple of tools and a phone / music player etc. Very similar to the CamelBak Hydrobak.

must admit it is superb quality, one problem though, any drink you have tastes like poo, any ideas on how to prevent the bad taste.
