I want to run singlespeed on my bike, but for some reason don't like the look of rear chain tensioners (my bike has vertical dropouts)...

Is it possible to fit a front chain tensioner/ are there any under 40 quid? I want to run bmx cranks and chainring though!

DMR do some cheapish chain tensioners which should solve your problem; by adjusting the angle of the tensioner you should be able to ajust the chain tension so it is just right!

    It probably won't work.
To see why grab a chain and put it on your bike, as short as you can.
Then push the lower part of the chain up, next to the crankring, like a front chain device would.
It will most likely hit the chainstays before it's tight enough.
And if you do manage to get the chain tight it will be sheer luck, 'cause other combinations of sprockets wil generate differente chain lenghts, thus demanding different solutions!
You won't be able to eliminate the slack caused by an excess of chain of 1 inch (one full link), or anywhere near it. With a little luck you'll solve this with an half link and a front chain device, but I'm not sure.
Some rear chain tensioners will allow you to deal with 1inch excess of chain, but only the ones with 2 rollers.

Vertical dropouts are allways tricky for single speed...
Horizontal dropouts are better for single speed but can be tricky for disc brakes
