XC Newbie Tips?

Somehow I'm racing the Loch Lomond triathlon mid-month and it's got an offroad XC-type bike leg.
I don't do offroad! It scares I, master Frodo!
Given that I have a rigid MTB (old Cannondale Bad Boy) with fat 2"-ish generic MTB tyres, and limited skill... are there any fast-XC tips to share with a noob?

You may need some new tyres but not knowing what you have or what terrain you are doing I can't really recommend any.
A couple of useful sites to get you started:

http://www.mtbbritain.co.uk/tips_page.html (a really good resource)
