Just a quick one...Anyone know whether it's ok to split and rejoin a Campag C9 chain (9speed) just by pushing out the pin the pushing back in? I know Shimano need special pins and SRAM have there quicklink, just wondered whether anything similar for campag. Cheers.

I believe that you have to fork out for a very expensive tool œ60[:(] to do the job, I will be popping into my LBS to get them to do it and fit a SRAM power link for my new Campag 10spd chain.

BobbyB, you can use a standard chain tool for the C9 chain, it is only for the 10 speed Campag chains that you need a special tool and special pins. There are also alternative tools out there without having to fork out œ60 for the Campag one.

Standard chain tool will be fine - I did mine last night.

Bern, will I be able to fit a SRAM powerlink to my Campag 10 spd chain?

Quick-links are fine for 10 speed - just make sure it's the right width for your chain - some are 6.0mm (ultra-narrow) and others 6.25mm. The Connex and KMC links are easier to split than the SRAM ones IME.

Thanks Monty, I'll pop in to LBS and get them to sort out the correct sizing, (I think it's the ultra narrow 10 spd) but, as I need to go in and show off my new steed anyway! They can split the chain and fit the appropriate link for me. (buggered if I'm spending silly money on some special tool)

The new Campag 10 chain is 5.9mm. They come in a pack of two with a small length of spare chain for some reason. It is not advisable to use a Sram quick link on a Campag chain plus their new 10 speed link is designed for a once fit only.

As Monty pointed out there are other 10 speed chains on the market like Connex(Wipperman) and KMC which posses easier to split and re-join.

I put a Mavic chain on the wife's Campag 10sp equipped bike - good chain with a quick link thing , would buy one again .

Topeak Super chain tool works with Shimano 10 chains, and their ChainBot may also work with Campag 10.

Park also have a tool called CT-3 that works with all 10 speed chains. Any decent shop should have them.

Campag 9sp chain can be split and rejoined in the conventional way with any good chain tool. In fact that is what you're supposed to do with it. However, it's safer and more convenient to use a SRAM 9-speed Powerlink.

Campag 10sp chains are only supposed to be joined with a special tool in a certain way - but I prefer to use a a Wipperman Connex link - "Shimano" version for Campag Ultra Narrow. Note that it should be used a certain way up if your cassette goes down to 12 or 11 teeth.
