Look at motorcross ones, and also Polaris.

Re: Racing on a Specialized Hotrock - any recommended upgrad

I can't remember off the top of my head - the specialized website has an archive section which might have the info :)

Re: Racing on a Specialized Hotrock - any recommended upgrad

My son's Hotrock had steel bars, I swapped them for aluminium ones 2nd hand from ebay. Lighter seatpost I had lying around. Tyres is a good one. Could you get hold of a rigid fork?

Re: Light Balance Bike

Loads out there now. Strider or a new brand Cruzee which sells from bike shops. Watch out for the size of the wooden ones - some are too big for a 2 year old.

6 months on a balance bike and he will be on a pedal bike with no stabilisers.

Re: Kids 24" Full suspension build

Great to see this. I having been looking at the 20" version of one of these bikes wondering if it would be a good base for a build.

Re: Balance bike to peddles transition?

Mine started on a balance bike at 19 months and 3 months later he was on a pedal bike. He was so tiny he couldn't touch the ground for a long time. He is almost 4 now and still likes to ride a balance bike occasionally.

So as soon as you like for the transition :)

Re: Trail Angels

I gave up using a trailgator by the time my son was 3. Much easier to just push up the hills (either riding or pushing bikes) . Mind you we don't ride for much longer than 5 or 6 miles.

Re: Balance Bike to Pedal Bike – Rothan to Cnoc 14

Oh yes I had forgotten how much running beside him I did! I was like a deranged person running everywhere as he was so small that when he learnt to ride he couldn't actually get his feet to the ground when he stopped! Even when we upgraded to a Specialized Hotrock 12 for his second birthday he still...

Re: Balance Bike to Pedal Bike – Rothan to Cnoc 14

Sounds like he is doing really well. I used to love the  expressions on people's faces as a baby* rode past them on a bike with no stabilisers.

* ok he wasn't quite a baby but he is small for his age and didn't have much hair.

Re: Sizing

I think the wooden ones tend to be bigger than the metal ones. The smallest bikes are Strider and Puky LRM

Re: Sizing

Have you thought about a balance bike?

14" would probably be fine with stabilisers, or even a 12".

I would go for the Rothan. Don't have to have a Strider to do the Strider training/races I think

Re: Growing pains

Well done, I feel your pain! The smallest boy this year got a bigger balance bike and I built him a bigger pedal bike. The middle boy got through the year without any new bikes (but he did have 2 new in 2012...)
