i agree with the shimano cup and cone hubs. on the merlin I have XT's and on my GT i have deores. both have done over 1000 miles, with only slight adjustment and no servicing.

Was knocked off my GT the other day and although the rim took a hammering, the hub was fine!

to be fair kanya, the xcr5 and the boardman pro are two very different bike. ones a full on xc bike, whereas the GT is very much a trail/ light all mountain bike.

try and get an 09 or even 08 bike brand new. look in the back of magazines, internet etc. loads of shops are selling 'old stock', last years stuff, with huuge discounts. all works the same as '10 stuff pretty much. hardly any difference!

by putting a 100/120mm fork on it would mess up the geometry. and you'd still have 6 inches out back. may as well just get an xc bike!

i don't see that much change coming to be honest. other than gearboxes and belt drives. gears you can change without pedalling will be the biggest revolution. suspension will get more efficient, lighter and stiffer. and please lets hope to high heaven no electronic abs, suspension **** gets in the m...

i have tech m4's which replaced juicy 5's. no comparison. hopes feel so much better, there's miles more control, and power is ok, i've not had a problem with that!! my only gripe is rotor drag. mine won't go away, calipers are alligned properly just the rotor is ever so slightly bent, and the floati...

I'm sure Fox and SRAM will be working on electronic damping systems for focks in a similar vain to the cannondale SIMON system, it will be a race to be first to the market with a viable, reliable system on that so will follow years of crap, notchy, heavy, unreliable forks and shocks until in 10 yea...

i'm pretty sure the 09 bikes would have 09 forks. except maybe the really early ones or demo bikes. they couldnt really call them 09 bikes if they actually had 08 stuff on them!

If you could get an expert, would you be able to go for the carbon? IF you can, I'd definitely go for that over the alloy.

For the best value, make sure you buy an 09 model. My mate has just saved £500 by doing this, his bike should have been £1400 and he payed £900. You'd better hurry up though as most shops have now sold out of 09 models. Most of the time theyv'e only changed the graphics. or changed one component fr...
